Saturday’s letters: UCP trying to fix health care

After reading the various articles on the Alberta Surgical Group (ASG) and the fired AHS chief, I must write to the editor. I recently had my knee replaced at ASG and it was the most efficient and professional medical facility I have used in my 40-plus years of living in Alberta. The day I had my knee done there were 14 other replacements completed. Name one Edmonton hospital which would have completed five/day. Everyone was happy, smiling and very responsive to the patients’ needs. I was extremely impressed with this innovative health-care solution and must thank Premier Smith and the UCP for venturing into this space.

Now, it sounds to me like the fired AHS chief has some sour grapes about being fired. Her motives should seriously be questioned, and it seems like the media is painting her as a saint. Anyone who feels like the AHS was running effectively must not have visited a hospital because my experiences are that it’s extremely inefficient. She and the board should have been fired due to poor management.

Thanks Premier Smith and Adriana LaGrange for having the vision to challenge the status quo. There’s a lot more to do and I know you’ll do it.

Trump, Musk staging a coup

Our neighbour south of the 49th is in the midst of a coup launched by Trump and his DOGE henchman, Elon Musk. No other word accurately captures the fast-paced and unlawful attacks against U.S. government institutions.

As Canadians, we must not be fooled. Canada must choose not to do business with Musk and his billionaire tech cronies. Economic pressure can be applied by not buying U.S. products or travelling to the U.S. Provincial premiers must put their differences aside and join with the federal government: the true north
strong, free and in harmony. Our provincial premiers must act in unison when dealing with the tyrant Trump; going it alone is a sign of weakness. Premiers who pander to their political base only show their weakness.

It is incumbent on our elected officials to follow Canadian law and act to respect and safeguard our federal and provincial institutions and democracy.

One school system to save costs

One simple solution for balancing the education budget in Alberta and helping solve the current employee problem: Stop duplicating the spending on similar systems. Combine the public and Catholic school programs into one public system devoted to the three Rs in teaching. No more religion in our school system. Religion should be taught at home by parents or by religious scholars in places of worship.

No more charter schools or private schools unless the parents are prepared to teach the three Rs and 100 per cent of the cost. No more doubling up of schools, teachers, boards, management and other workers. One system, one cost. I think the taxpayers would be happy with one public educational system.
