Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus Receives Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

Lakewood, NJMonmouth Medical Center Southern Campus (MMCSC) has been awarded Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). This accreditation program is an ACEP-governed national accreditation program dedicated to improving the emergency department care of adults 65 and older.

“We are proud to be recognized for the outstanding emergency care that we offer to our older adult community,” says Dr. Philip Passes, Chief Administrative Officer. “Our clinical team is dedicated to the unique needs of an increasing geriatric population, improving patient outcomes by standardizing our approach to geriatric medicine, and enhancing the environment of care.”

Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus has worked consistently with the ACEP, succeeding in more than two dozen best practices for geriatric emergency care to achieve this higher standard of care for older adults. MMCSC has met all geriatric ED Guidelines with measures ranging from geriatric-friendly equipment such as bedding, lighting, and non-slip flooring, and adding specialized staff.

The GEDA program provides specific criteria and goals for emergency clinicians and administrators to target, all while aligning with what matters to the older adult and their family caregivers. According to the organization, the concept of a geriatric emergency department has developed in the past decade as hospitals recognize that one size ED care does not fit all, as older emergency patients have presentations, needs, dispositions, and outcomes that are quite specific to them.

“This accomplishment reflects the dedication and hard work or our entire team,” said Tamer Abdelhakiem, Administrative Director of Emergency and Critical Care Services at MMCSC. “It also highlights our commitment to providing exceptional, patient-centered care to our geriatric population, ensuring their needs are met with compassion, expertise and innovation. We are excited to continue elevating the care we provide to our patients and serving as a model for excellence in geriatric emergency care.”
