The Alexandria Health Department is looking for volunteers to join community coalitions to create the city’s next five-year Health Improvement Plan.
In the upcoming 2026-2031 plan, AHD will focus on citywide mental wellness, as well as in the Landmark/Van Dorn corridor in the West End and the city’s Arlandria neighborhood. The focus areas were chosen in AHD’s most recent State of Health Report. Each subject matter area will be worked on by a coalition, which will be made up of “Alexandria residents, businesses, faith leaders, community groups, and others who work and spend time here,” according to AHD.
“Alexandria Health Department and the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria will support coalitions by facilitating the planning process, providing useful data, coordinating with other City agencies and publishing the final plans,” AHD said in a release.
Coalitions will meet less than five hours a month to create plans and solutions on their focus areas, and the final draft plans will be released in the summer.
“The 2020-2025 Community Health Improvement Plan has significantly improved our community,” Allen Lomax, chair of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria, said in a release. “Residents created solutions that included making DASH buses free, launching Alexandria’s Healthy Homes Initiative, preparing middle schoolers to pursue a college education and providing mental health support to pregnant and postpartum clients.”
